BACKSTEP SEQUENCEThe picture below illustrates the back stepping sequence when welding . This method reduces distortion but does increase the residual stress in each weld. The residual stress is usually not a factor for most applications. Another way to think of it is to weld the joint in small sections with all beads stopping on the start of a previous weld.
