In reference to http://aws.org/cgi-bin/mwf/topic_show.pl?id=4063 . The following sketches indicate the significance of break in the arrow line. This is used to indicate which edge of a joint is to be prepared. The 1st two sketches below show a case in which either side could be beveled.
The next two sketches show the use of a break in the arrow line to signify which member is to be prepared. This can sometime be significant to reduce stress in the through thickness direction of a member (2nd sketch below) . Or to aid in welding as would be the case with a horizontal joint.
